July 6-16 / Teatro Nucleo in the Caucasus Region for a “theater for peace”

Teatro Nucleo in the Caucasus Region for a “theater for peace”. In collaboration with NGOs of Armenia and Germany Teatro Nucleo will implement  in Georgia, near Tbilisi, a theater project aimed at human rights workers in Chechnya, Nagorno Kharabak, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Lebanon. There will also be participants and observers of a Dutch NGO that takes care of human rights in Lebanon. The project, which will take place in July, involves a phase of training seminars, and the realization of a performance with all participants.

The workshop will be based in Georgia because this country is considered “neutral” from all participating countries. For several years now the various situations of confrontation in the Caucasus know a time of fragile stability, a sort of “armed peace” that can explode at any time. The efforts of human rights activists, most young people in the various NGO are more valuable as possible and  needed and precious than now, before the fire flare up again and then we find ourselves on the news, when it is too late. The intent of the Teatro Nucleo is to strengthen and empower the capacity of these brave peace workers, to use the introspective, communicative and expressive capacity theater have, to deal with non-violent and creative ways the terrible conflicts taking place in that area of Eastern Europe . The participants, belonging to ethnic groups and nationalities in permanent struggle, since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, do not usually share spaces and projects. The fact that the participants and their organizations have agreed to achieve this workshop is already a big success; it was complex and very difficult to work at the promotion, organization and selection of participants in the different regions. Grudges, mutual distrust and centuries old prejudices are sometimes almost insurmountable obstacles, to create situations where you can compare and find common ground where it can grow peace. This is the meaning of “Theatre for peace” that the operators of the Teatro Nucleo are preparing to carry out, in a kind of ideal continuity of the project  in 1989 and in 2010 was called “Mir Caravan” (caravan for peace) and brought nine theater companies in Eastern and Western Europe from Moscow to Paris in six months of intense creative coexistence.
